IND vs NZ 2026 ODI Series: New Zealand Scripts History as India’s Home Dominance Crumbles

The India vs New Zealand ODI series 2026 concluded with a historic shift in international cricket. In what was the Indian Cricket Team’s first ODI series of 2026, the hosts suffered a shocking setback. Despite a spirited fight, the "Men in Blue" failed to maintain their winning streak against a resilient New Zealand side in the Gautam Gambhir (GG) coaching era.

A Historic Defeat at Home

For the first time in cricketing history, New Zealand has won an ODI series on Indian soil. Even without several of their primary stars, the Black Caps managed to edge over a transitioning Indian side. This loss marks a concerning trend for the hosts, as it becomes the third home series defeat under head coach Gautam Gambhir, adding pressure on the team management ahead of future ICC events.

Daryl Mitchell: The New ODI No 1 Batter

The standout performer of the series was undoubtedly Daryl Mitchell, who was rightfully awarded the Player of the Series. Mitchell was in sublime form, dismantling the Indian bowling attack with an incredible display of consistency. Over the three-match series, he notched up two centuries and one half-century, with scores of 137, 131, and 84.

With this phenomenal performance, Daryl Mitchell has officially overtaken Virat Kohli to become the No. 1 ODI Batsman in the ICC Rankings.

Virat Kohli’s 85th Century: A Bitter-Sweet Milestone

While India lost the series, the "King" continued to rewrite the record books. Virat Kohli smashed his 85th International Century (and his 54th in ODIs) during the 3rd match at Indore. Despite his magnificent knock, Kohli found himself fighting a lone battle as the lack of support from the other end ultimately led to India's defeat in the series decider.

What’s Next? The T20I Series Decider

The action now shifts to the shortest format. The India vs New Zealand T20 series is set to kick off on January 21, 2026. This series holds immense significance; if India loses, New Zealand will become one of the rare teams to defeat India in a full-format series sweep (Winning Tests, ODIs, and T20Is) on Indian soil.
